The Paper Plant (Fatsia japonica) is a bold evergreen houseplant, grown for its large, deeply lobed, glossy green leaves and striking architectural shape.
It is naturally shade tolerant, which makes it one of the easiest and most adaptable foliage plants for a home or office. It copes well with the lower light levels found in hallways, bedrooms and north-facing rooms, and keeps its leaves all year round.
It arrives as an established plant in a 12cm pot, ready to display straight away. Keep it in bright to medium indirect light, out of strong direct sun and away from cold draughts, and water regularly, allowing the top of the compost to dry slightly between waterings. It asks for very little beyond that, which is why it suits a beginner as well as an experienced plant keeper.
The leaves and berries of Fatsia japonica are harmful if eaten, so keep it where curious pets or children cannot chew on it.
