Griselinia littoralis is a fast growing evergreen hedge with smooth apple green leaves, and the best hedge we sell for a salty wind.
The leaves are broad, glossy and a fresh light green, and they stay on the plant all winter, so a griselinia hedge is as solid a screen in February as it is in July. Growth is quick once it is settled, which makes it a sensible choice when you want privacy in a few seasons rather than a decade, and it takes clipping well enough to be held at whatever height suits the boundary.
It is outstanding by the sea and shrugs off salt laden wind that scorches other evergreens. Inland it is rated H4, which makes it one of the less hardy evergreen hedges we sell, so a hard winter can damage it and it is less reliable in the far north. Plant it in full sun or partial shade in moist, well drained garden soil, and give it a sheltered spot if you garden somewhere cold.
Supplied in a 2 litre pot as a well established young shrub, ready to plant straight out. Water through the first season while it roots, and trim once or twice in the growing season to keep the face of the hedge tidy.
