Where it comes from: The Zechstein seabed lies deep under northern Europe and is about 250 million years old. The magnesium chloride is extracted in the northern Netherlands using only water pressure, then the water is evaporated to form flakes. Because the source is underground, it has not been exposed to modern-day surface pollution, and it does not need the extra refining that surface sources often require.

How to use: Bath: dissolve 2–3 cups in warm (not hot) water and soak for 20–30 minutes. Foot soak: dissolve ½ cup in a basin of warm water.
