USS Thresher SSN 593 60th Anniversary Memorial Coin

The USS Thresher SSN 593 60th Anniversary Memorial Coin honors the 129 men lost with the nuclear-powered submarine on April 10, 1963. Made in New Jersey, USA, this 1.75-inch brass coin has a gold-tone finish and commemorative artwork on both sides.

USS Thresher emblem and Vis Tacita

The front features a colorized USS Thresher emblem with shark, submarine and atom imagery. Wreaths symbolize loss, while a rope-style border frames “60th Anniversary,” “USS Thresher” and the motto “Vis Tacita,” meaning “Silent Force.” The Mintonator symbol appears below the emblem.

Remembering the 129

The reverse centers the number 129 to remember every man lost. Surrounding rings represent the sonar pings sent by the submarine rescue vessel USS Skylark ASR 20 in the search for Thresher. The outer stars carry the design’s North Star symbolism: guidance, staying on course and finding the way back to port.
