USS Hyman G. Rickover SSN 795 First Ship's Challenge Coin

The USS Hyman G. Rickover SSN 795 First Ship's Challenge Coin brings together a submarine scene and a seated portrait of Admiral Rickover in an atom-inspired design. Listed as one of the first coins made for the Rickover, this 2.5 × 1.625-inch collectible is the First Ship's Coin edition, separate from the christening version.

Rickover submarine scene

The front places a submarine at the center of an elongated oval bearing “USS Hyman G. Rickover” and “Committed to Excellence.” The hull number SSN 795 appears across the upper orbit shapes, with dolphin imagery beneath the scene. Dark backgrounds contrast with the metallic-toned outlines and raised details.

Admiral Rickover portrait

The reverse turns the outline vertically around a seated portrait and the inscription “The Devil Is in the Details.” Fine vertical lines cross the black background, while circular atomic motifs above and below the portrait echo the coin's orbit-inspired shape.
