A characterful hare head brooch, rendered in a sculptural, almost folkloric style, with elongated upright ears and finely textured detailing across the face. The piece is finished in a softly aged silver-tone metal, its surface subtly irregular and tactile, giving it the impression of something cast rather than overly refined.
The eyes are set with deep red glass stones, which catch the light with a warm, glowing intensity and lend the brooch a slightly mysterious, nocturnal quality. This use of coloured glass, combined with the animal motif, recalls elements of Victorian jewellery—particularly the 19th-century fascination with nature, symbolism and expressive adornment. Animal-themed pieces, including hares and rabbits, were often associated with themes of intuition, renewal and the natural world, and appeared in both sentimental and more whimsical forms of jewellery.
While not a period piece, this brooch draws convincingly on that Victorian sensibility, reinterpreted in a more contemporary, slightly raw aesthetic. The reverse is fitted with a traditional pin fastening, secure and easy to wear; please refer to photographs for construction and finish.
A distinctive, slightly gothic accessory with strong visual presence and a nod to historical ornament.
