These handmade Sumi-e brushes feature natural deer tail or skunk bristles, each selected for their ability to produce a wide range of expressive marks. From fine, controlled lines to multiple delicate strands, broken lines, and scattered dots, these brushes offer versatility through changes in pressure, angle, and movement.

The soft, responsive bristles can be brought together into a fine point for detailed line work or separated into individual strands to create multiple marks in a single stroke. Light pressure allows the bristles to move independently across the surface, while increased pressure opens the brush for broader, more expressive applications.
Each brush has its own characteristics, encouraging experimentation with ink loading, movement, and the amount of contact with the painting surface.
Choose Your Brush
White Deer Tail – Short Straight Handle

A lightweight, compact brush with a straight, burned bamboo handle and long white deer tail bristles. The soft bristles taper to a fine point and can separate into multiple strands for delicate, irregular lines and fine textural marks. The shorter handle provides comfortable control for detailed and expressive brushwork.
White Deer Tail – Short Curved Handle

This brush features a naturally curved, burned bamboo handle and soft white deer tail bristles. The lightweight design allows for easy movement and changes in direction. The bristles can be gathered into a fine point or opened into separate strands, producing fine lines, broken marks, and delicate textures.
Skunk Bristle – Long Bamboo Handle

Featuring a longer, slender bamboo handle and natural skunk bristles, this brush offers a different balance and range of movement. The tapered bristle head can produce fine, flowing lines or separate into multiple strands for layered, irregular marks. The extended handle is particularly useful for loose, gestural movements and working with a lighter touch.
