Historical Context
Founded in Germany in 1975 by designer Cari Zalloni and entrepreneur Günter Böttcher, Cazal was created as an eyewear brand with a strong emphasis on distinctive design and craftsmanship. Zalloni developed a maximalist aesthetic, characterised by bold geometric forms, sculptural volumes, contrasting materials, rich colours, and intricate details. The brand quickly developed a cult following during the 1980s, particularly within hip-hop culture, where its expressive frames became closely associated with the era’s visual identity.
